Primary Source Analysis – Slavery

1.      What are the main complaints of the King?
2.      What impact did the Portuguese have in Kongo?
3.      What does the King want Portugal to do?
4.      What are the different ways of receiving slaves?
5.      Which method is the most preferable?
6.      There is evidence that Equiano fabricated his accounts of the middle passage.  Is this still a valuable source if it is untrue?  Why or why not?
7.      What are the differences Equiano outlines in American slavery versus African slavery?
8.      What is implied by Equiano’s use of “nominal Christians” in the final paragraph?

Question: Analyze the different attitudes towards slavery and the slave trade, as shown by the three sources.  Make sure you address POV, tone, and purpose in your discussion of each of the sources.  Identify an additional document that would help you answer the question.

You do NOT need to group the documents.

Checklist:

Here are the documents in case you need them:

Extra Credit for 2nd term

Here's the extra credit that you can complete for term 2.  For each pdf, you need to read both articles and then complete at least one full page of analysis of the articles, and which is more convincing any why.  (The full page does NOT include all the superfluous stuff like your name, class, date, assignment, period, etc. that you use to take up space in papers.  I'm on to your silly tricks!)

And here are the documents:  (These files are large because the resolution is really good.  If your computer has a slow connection, you should try the second set of links.  The resolution is kind of crappy, but the files will download very quickly.  Your choice)

Email me if you can't get these links to work.  This is all a grand experiment.
